Traditional home security systems were hard-wired into the property. In recent years, wireless security systems have become a viable option for many residents. Both system have their benefits and weaknesses, so it’s important for consumers to assess their budget, vulnerability to property crime, and physical infrastructure to find the system that will work for them.
Installation
Hard-wired security systems require zone and entryway sensors to be physically connected to the master controller, which typically requires drilling into and through walls. This typically requires a trained technician to come on site and spend several hours to install the unit. On the other hand, a wireless system requires no drilling and can often be installed by the customer.
Maintenance
Hard-wired systems require little maintenance. Since all sensors are connected to the main controller, only one set of batteries needs to be periodically replaced. In some cases, a hard-wired system is tied to the property’s power grid, so in the event of power failure, the system typically would go down unless there’s a fail-safe. A wireless security system, on the other hand, requires each sensor to be individually powered, and the batteries replaced more often. Individual units will beep when batteries are running low. But since they’re not tied to the property’s power grid, they can operate in black-outs just fine.
Alerting
Hard-wired security systems are in direct communication with the provider’s monitoring center, which means in the event an alarm goes off, local authorities are notified and on site in moments. This, of course, requires a monthly monitoring fee or a service lease. Though some wireless alarm systems can notify authorities with a recorded message, most typically trigger a physical alarm aimed at deterring intruders from entering.
Portability
Hard-wired systems, of course, are fixed into the property. Wireless alarm systems can be transported, and thus are ideal for renters and frequent movers.
Residents should assess their situation, including physical infrastructure, total square footage, property crime risk, and security budget to decide if they should go with a hard-wired security system or a wireless one.
