You can have the best home burglar alarms on the planet but you're asking for trouble if you don’t lock your doors and windows. Your windows all need to have locks and your doors need to lock from both the inside and the outside.
- If you have trouble fumbling with keys in door locks, you can purchase fingerprint locks that allow you to sidestep using keys.
- If your door is located near a window, use deadbolts with captive key locks. The removable thumb latches on these locks make it impossible for a burglar to reach through a window and unlock the door.
- A chain lock on the inside of the door may not stop a home invader, but it will certainly slow him down. Just don’t bother to open the door to strangers. Install a peep hole in the door.
- Don’t use the same key for all the locks in your house.
- Replace antique locks on vintage homes with new technology.
