We all think of our pets as family members, and when there's an emergency, we want to make sure they're safe. For this reason, it’s important to incorporate pets in your advance emergency planning so that you can act quickly in the event that your family becomes the victim of a fire or natural disaster.

Pet Do’s

  • With few exceptions, pets are not allowed in shelters or Red Cross facilities. If you need to relocate quickly, you should know which area hotels allow pets or which neighbors, friends, or family members would be willing and able to accommodate your pets for a short period of time.
  • Assemble an emergency kit for your pets that includes food, a bottle of water, a can opener, food and water dishes; toys, litter and a pan; heating pads and blankets if your pet is sensitive to cold temperatures; veterinarian information, medical records, leashes; and a first aid kit that can treat injuries relevant to your type of pet, and medications.
  • If your pets are not mobile (that is, if they’re kept in a cage – like parrots, reptiles, or rabbits), store the carrier close to the pet’s habitat so that you’re not frantically searching for it or unable to enter the room it’s in during an emergency. You can also store the emergency kit in the same area so that they’re both easily accessible.
  • Many animals are aware of and respond to your emotions. If possible, try to remain calm and speak to them softly to decrease their anxiety.
  • Get your pets outside as soon as possible if an emergency arises.
  • Keep your pets locked in a secure vehicle or a carrier while you wait for help.

Pet Don’ts

  • Always prioritize human life over animal life; help other family members and neighbors before assisting a pet.
  • Never jeopardize your own safety by reentering or remaining in a burning or unsafe structure, and never allow anyone else to do so.
