Prevention is the key to home security. And by taking simple actions, you can thwart a burglar’s efforts.
- If a stranger shows up at your door saying he needs help or asks to use your phone, don’t be so quick to invite them in. Burglars use this method to invade your home. Ask them to wait outside while you call for help yourself.
- Make sure you have at least a 1-inch throw deadbolts on all your exterior doors and keep them locked whether you're home or not.
- Use a pipe or metal bar in the track on the bottom of sliding glass doors and windows. They should be long enough to prevent the glass from sliding even an inch.
- Immediately replace any rotted window frames or door frames around your house. It makes it far too easy for an intruder to force his way into your home.
