Does ADT only protect against burglary?

Although many people (accurately) think of theft prevention when they hear “security systems,” ADT offers many other services to supplement a burglar alarm.  For example, you can add fire and carbon monoxide detection, medical monitoring services (called “personal emergency response”) for seniors or disabled individuals, and video surveillance that can even be accessed on your smart-phone.

How much does ADT security cost?

The price of ADT service will depend on the number of services that you add and the types of devices that you need.  In general, standard residential service, as ADT advertises, costs about $1 per day (roughly $30 per month), which is comparable to other common monthly expenses like internet access and cellular phones.  If you need business security or add options like cameras, heat sensors, or private armed response (as opposed to having ADT call your local police department), the price goes up.

What equipment do I need to get ADT security?

Because everyone’s living situation and needs are different, ADT offers a free home security evaluation.  Usually, you will need a keypad, window and door sensors, and a siren/communication module (sometimes this is merged with the keypad).  There are many other optional ADT equipment additions as well.

How do ADT alarm systems work?

Most systems work by alerting ADT when a window or door sensor falls out of alignment (because the window or door is opened).  ADT may also be alerted of a problem by a motion sensor, a sound (glass-break) sensor, a heat sensor, a carbon monoxide or smoke detector, a medical monitoring device, or activation of one or more panic buttons on the keypad.

Will I have to get new equipment when I move?

Maybe.  Both wired and wireless systems are available; many wireless systems require more permanent installation and are difficult to move.  However, ADT often offers discounts on equipment and installation for customers who are planning to move.
